Ok..so I'm cooking a pumpkin type dessert last night (kinda like a pumpkin custard), it smelled HEAVENLY! DH and I were at the kitchen table just enjoying our meal and anticipating a nice, warm, spicey pumpkin custard thingy and we heare a loud POP. IMMEDIATELY we knew what had happened..the pyrex casserole pan I had my pumpkin in EXPLODED in the oven!!! It was a HUGE mess with glass and pumpkin everywhere  I was so disappointed...I had my heart set on the pumpkin.. :( I had used this casserole dish NUMEROUS times, as well as other pyrex pans....I don't know why it burst..maybe it was old? I do know this, I will only use metal pans from now on! :dying:

:( Holy flying pumpkin guts Batman!

That's a shame. Maybe the dish had a stress break somewhere-you mentioned it being older.

I'm sorry. Please try again and post a recipe so you can make us all jealous and drooling. :)

LOL! I am not sure exactly where I found the recipe..it might have been the Mangia Mangia room...I cut and paste recipes I like then print them out to put in a binder I keep in my kitchen.

this is the recipe I used:
Pumpkin spice
1 can pumpkin
2 eggs (I upped the eggs to 3 because I used the SUPERsized canned pumpkin :D )
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup Splenda
splash of Davinic's Caramel syrup for taste (or another kind that would work for pumpkin)
chopped nuts (I liked pecans) for crust
butter as needed (add as much butter as you want..you can taste the mix and decide how buttery you want it)

Preheat oven to 350. Saute enough pecans to cover the bottom of your pan in butter (if you want a few nuts on top, saute them now too). Mix all ingredients together. Add your pumpkin spice (and maybe cinnamon) to taste. Mix well. Spray the pan with Pam, then cover your pan with your sauted pecans. Add the pumpkin mix. Bake at 350 for 35 mins or until done. you can eat hot, or cool..it is really good with whipped cream I think!

That is the recipe I use...I have only baked this twice..and the second time don't count cause we didn't get to eat it! LOLOLOL! You could add Cream cheese, to it I would think and make it better...tweak away at it and see how it can be made better and post your revisions ;)

I've never used glass in the oven before because I'm too scared. I guess now I never will. Sorry about your pie. :( Did you guys at least lick the oven clean? :D

Sounds like it had a little crack someplace. I have used glass in the oven for things like this forever and never had one break. Metal is not good unless it is heavy stanless steel. I can sympathize with looking forward to it and not getting it though -:(

Sorry the pan exploded. :( The custard sounds good. I have lots of pumpkins growing in the garden now. I can't wait. :)

Sorry to hear about your custard. I had the same thing happen too, I was making a popover in the oven (very light breaded roll). The pyrex dish that the popover was in exploded and made a mess. Whenever I make something now I check the dishes for cracks.

:stroke: Sorry that happened! Ruined dessert and an explosion in the oven - that's just too sad!

Whenever using glass, pyrex, or ceramic casseroles or baking pans, two things are important. NEVER set a hot pan on water of any kind. It will cause stress, and can cause the pan to do exactly what yours did. In fact, it can break right there before your eyes. Never add water to a hot pan - you know how we tend to empty the casserole or baking dish and put it directly in the sink full of soapy water, or add water to the bottom to soak it. It is not pretty when it explodes on your counter. Always set on a wire rack to cool so that condensation does not form underneath the pan.

Another pointer, since we are talking about glass here....never microwave water by itself in a container. There should be sugar, or salt, or even a plastic spoon. The water may not even appear to boil, but then it can suddenly explode. I used to do this all the time - heat up a cup of water for a recipe, or to make hot chocolate. One time, as soon as I added the cocoa mix, the water boiled over - huge mess. I was lucky to note get burned.

Great advice, Auntie!! I really had no idea I should be putting something IN the water I'm boiling!!
