We had chicken breasts marinated in balsamic vinaigrette, with rosemary branches inserted under the skin, cooked on the grill. On the side we had store-bought tomatoes topped with chopped basil from the garden, and a spinach salad with dried cherries and almonds. I love the fresh herbs!

That's great! I only grow cilantro. I need to plant some basil. I've been harvesting some really nice cherry tomatoes, yellow pear tomatoes, along with some lemon cucumbers.

Basil, dill, rosemary, cilantro....what else would be good? Do you plant them in containers? I know nothing about growing my own herbs.

I don't have any ripe tomatoes yet, but I have a ton of green ones.
I have eight tomato plants. Six cherry tomatoes, one regular large tomato, and one called "Sweet 100." Sweet 100 seems to be a sort of grape tomato - can't wait for some of those to ripen!
I didn't want all those cherry tomatoes, but they only sold the plants in six packs and I couldn't bear to throw any of them away :) I was going on vacation right after I got them and didn't have time to find anybody to give them to. Think we will have enough tomatoes for two people? :D

Herbs are the best. They are so easy to grow and add so much flavor to your food. Have a few different varities of basil and oregano and sage. Love em.

Rose - Mint, parsley, chives, and one of my absolute favorites, tarragon!
Mine are all in pots. The only thing that isn't growing like crazy is the rosemary. It's doing fine, but not getting really big.
I also have a lot of lavender as a landscaping plant, but don't use it for cooking.

I haven't had a really decent home grown tomato, yet. The storms we've had this summer have really be hell on all the plants. I was hoping to be overwhelmed with tomatoes so that I could make lots and lots of fresh, homemade salsa. Guess that won't happen. Last year I canned 48 pints, all with donated tomatoes.

It's so great you grow your own. I can't grow an air plant, I swear I kill everything that doesn't have fur or hair. LOL

Black basil is also a nice plant. It tastes the same as regular basil, but it adds some color to your herb garden.

I have basil, lavendar, chives, and sage in the garden this year. I have two almost ripe tomatoes! Just started harvesting green beans today. 4 types of squash are doing well, cuc's are slow. :( We love sliced tomatoes with a thin slice of fresh mozzarella cheese topped with a fresh basil leaf, then drizzled with an olive oil/balsalmic vinagrette. That's called a Caprese salad in Italy. :)

Rose, go to Home Depot or a nursery and buy them in little pots. They're less than $2 each, generally! Not worth the trouble of starting from seed, especially so late in the season.

I love cooking with fresh herbs! I agree that it saves a lot of money; the mark up on dried herbs is astronomical!
I have 12 plants on my balcony; half that I grew from seed and they are really flourishing! I have thyme, parsley, sage, marjoram, chervil, summer savory, rosemary, cilantro, chives, TONS of basil (probably 5 plants of Italian/Lemon basil) tarragon and dill which is not doing so hot. My favorite to cook with are marjoram, thyme, and summer savory. Rosemary is also great because it is so fragrant and makes most meats taste delish!

We should start a "cooking with herbs" thread in Mangia! Mangia! and post all our favorite herb-y recipes there :)
I will start it off with mojitos, LOL :D

Well, this year I just have chives and cilantro. We were gone on vacation a little late into spring so I got behind on the stuff I usually plant. And the nursereys here did not get many herbs. I started dill from seed but it is barely hanging on. I usually start basil also. Love the scent of the herbs when the sun shines on them. The tomato plants, well, they have a few leaves.....
Ellie, I started growing mine because the package of fresh herbs in the grocery store was 2 bucks and a plant growing was under a dollar :) I figured I couldn't go wrong!
